YOU ARE MINE
by Dave Reiss
I have a flannel shirt hanging in my closet that is mine. I haven’t worn it for awhile, but it is mine. No matter what my brother or sister say, it is mine. It has been in my possession for over twenty years, so by common law it is mine. For many years it was debated between my siblings and I whose shirt this was. So, when I moved from Pennsylvania to California, that shirt somehow made it into my luggage. It was and continues to be, mine.
The true ownership of that oversized green flannel shirt, was was popular in the 1990’s thanks to Grunge music, might be up for debate. Our ownership is not. In Isaiah 43:1 we read, The Lord who created you, the one who formed you says, “Do not be afraid, for I have redeemed you. I have called you by name; you are mine.” The God who created the entire universe, and the one who formed you in your mother’s womb, declares that you are mine.
Other things might try to claim ownership of your life; your choices, your friends, your pains and regrets, your dreams and ambitions, your expectations. All of these things might attempt to claim ownership of your life, but they do not. You are owned by God, and that is great thing. God.
God’s message in Isaiah continues, “When you go through deep waters, I will be with you. When you go through rivers of difficulty, you will not drown. When you walk through the fire of oppression, you will not be burned up; the flames will not consume you. For I am the Lord, your God.” God not only owns you, he protects you and wants what is best for you. Don’t let other things try to take control of your life. Give yourself over to the God who loves you, who has redeemed you, who calls you by name. YOU ARE HIS!
