SHAKE IT OFF!
By Cindy Mapes
My life is down in the dust; give me life through your word. Psalm 119:25 (Daleth)
The song by Taylor Swift comes to mind as I study this verse. “Shake it off, shake it off. ‘the haters are gonna hate, hate, hate…shake it off, shake it off.” Perhaps to say, if you fall down, just get up again and shake it off.
I want to be able to visualize what the author is saying. From the Hebrew alphabet of 22 letters, Daleth is the 4th letter, in our alphabet it would be the letter “D”. My life is down in the dust, or as if he is saying that he is Depressed or Distressed. Down in the dust, or “sticking” to the dust. He is thinking of his earthly bondage, or his attachment to worldly things. He is asking to be released from this. We study God’s word to learn and also give us understanding, or give us strength. The author is full of sorrow and is asking for life, or strength, in God’s word.
Daleth verses 25-32, in other descriptive words tells us “cause me to live, give me strength to free me of earthly things.” Or “I am stuck to the dust” in saying I am stuck to earthly things, but only you God, can revive me.
God is the “author” of his Bible, we worship God by reading his word. Answers for distress or sorrow are in this book. Reading and studying together as a youth group should give us what we need when we seek answers. Let us always remember, if we fall down, we can pick each other up.
