Known By Name
By Dave Reiss
Early in our marriage my wife and I had some great names picked out for our future children. One of our top names for boys was Logan, because we loved the character of Wolverine (The X-men movies has just come out). After we discovered we were going to have a girl, we decided that her name would be Ava Nicole. All that changed when we saw the movie, The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe. We fell in love with the character of Lucy and knew that was our daughter’s name.
“Before I was born the Lord called me; from my mother’s womb he has spoken my name.” – Isaiah 49:1b NIV
While it took us several months to come up with the name Lucy, God already knew her name. God called her while she was still being formed and has a special plan for her. While we are still seeing God’s calling played out, God already knows and is at work to bring His calling to life.
One of my favorite passages in the Bible is Psalm 139, and it talks about how God knows us deeper than we ever know ourselves. In the section below, verses 13-16, it talks about how God delicately and marvelously formed each of us.
You made all the delicate, inner parts of my body
and knit me together in my mother’s womb.
Thank you for making me so wonderfully complex!
Your workmanship is marvelous—how well I know it.
You watched me as I was being formed in utter seclusion,
as I was woven together in the dark of the womb.
You saw me before I was born.
Every day of my life was recorded in your book.
Every moment was laid out
before a single day had passed.
Psalm 139:13-16 NLT
God knew you from the beginning. He carefully and lovingly formed you. He spoke your name before it was even in your parent’s mind. He knows everything about you. This is the God of the universe, who loves you and has created you. He formed you to be unique and he has given you a purpose. He has called you to do and be someone greater than you can imagine.
